Writing Prompt #3
Tribute Examination
(2 points for Tributes)

Prior to the start of the games, each Tribute must appear before the Gamemakers to exhibit the skills that he or she possesses. The number of skills shown and the method of demonstration is entirely up to the Tribute; however, the skills demonstration may not exceed twenty minutes. All Tributes are allotted the same amount of time in the interest of fairness.

Points will be awarded in a national broadcast the evening that the examinations are complete. Scores range in number from 1 to 12, and they are awarded on an individual basis. Comparisons will not be drawn between Tributes, and each boy and girl will be judged on his or her own individual merit. Demonstrations that more impress the judges will receive higher scores. A higher score indicates a better likelihood of success in the arena as determined by the Gamemakers.

To receive credit for this writing prompt you must reply to this post with a 300+ word narrative of your character's skill demonstration. If your narrative does not meet this word count we will contact you and ask for it to be expanded. You will receive a comment on Friday, March 2 with your character's Gamemaker determined score. No scores will be given until that date. Please do not reply to each other's narratives, reply directly to this post.

Above all, have fun with this and be creative! And keep your character in mind when writing. We expect your character to have a realistic demonstration of what you've presented as his or her strengths and weaknesses to this point. We look forward to your demonstrations.

When it was his turn and he was sent in to the room, Bandit didn't bother saying anything to the distant figures of the gamemakers. He spared them one quick, sharp glance, and then moved to the area that had been set up to teach about traps and snares.

During their training days, he hadn't bothered with even trying any of the heavy weapons - he was stronger than most would suspect, having spent much of his life hauling bits of trains about, but he wasn't strong enough to do enough damage to cancel out how much wielding one of those would exhaust him. He'd spent about an hour with the bow and arrow, the first five minutes confirming his suspicions that he didn't have the arm length or strength necessary to get a powerful enough draw, and the rest of the time figuring out the ways in which shooting was limited.

The rest of the stations he'd spent a fairly equal amount of time at, with a bit more time at hand-to-hand combat; specifically, a number of holds and throws that even his small frame could manage that would give him the time and space to get out of there. He wasn't one of the faster tributes, from what he'd seen, but he was very proficient at sprinting and then hiding from his run-in with the Peacekeepers whenever he stole something here or there (speaking of, he wondered if he should do something about the growing stash he was building here at the Capitol). Bandit figured his best bet was sneak-attacks and assassinations, anything where he could put his opponent at a big enough disadvantage to outweigh his own disadvantages.

Which led to his current position, grabbing ropes and wires from the snares station before returning to the center of the room, where he sat down and quickly made a mess of it all, loops and circles and random-seeming knots. Then he suddenly stood, leaving the ropes still all over the floor, and grabbed a few things - weights and dummies, mostly, although he also grabbed a handful of plants which he placed on top of two of the dummies as he also wrapped the loops of rope around the new objects he had moved into place. Three of the more light-weight dummies waited next to him, each facing a different direction in a triangle around him, and Bandit finally addressed the gamemakers.

"I don't know what the arena will look like, so here's some different options. First, if it isn't flat but there's not trees." With that, he shoved one of the dummies forward, where it tripped an almost-invisible thin wire, which pulled on some rope which, through the magic of physics and simple mechanics, set loose an avalanche of weights on to the dummy. "Those would be rocks or ice, depending."

"Next, if there's trees." This was by far the easier one, which was why he was putting it in the middle of the demonstrations. A second dummy was pushed forward, where a rope caught it and swung it up, supported by the dummy-"trees". Bandit had calmly stepped away after pushing the dummy, selected a knife from the knife display, and threw it directly at dummy's throat. Not from too far away - a miss would be bad all around - but far enough to be slightly impressive. (His affinity for knives hadn't exactly come as a shock to Bandit, although he was surprised at the quality of his aim. He wasn't interested in sports of any kind, so the most he had ever thrown were rocks at bullies or the packs of coy-dogs that roamed the outskirts of the town.)

"Finally, if it's someplace flat and without trees." Which was really his favorite option, given where he had grown up. The final dummy he didn't push, and instead heaved it up (carefully not showing the strain it caused him) and put it down seemingly at random. "You'll have to imagine it was walking," he offered up offhandedly, before quickly going to the camouflage table and coloring himself as best he could to blend in with the floor of the training center - this demonstration honestly made no sense, unless the game was going to be held in a giant warehouse or something - and returning to his starting place, where he threw himself down, flat to the ground. He paused for a second to let them take in the almost unnoticeable bump his tiny form made, and then yanked on the wire that was laying next to his hand.

A series of wires sprung up around the dummy, all noticeably wider-ranged (Bandit didn't want them thinking it would only work if his mark stepped in one tiny specific space), yanking it the ground and tying its "feet" very efficiently. In one swift movement that he may or may not have been practicing the last three days, Bandit sprang up from the laying position and pounced on the dummy, knives in both hands.

He spent a good forty seconds viciously stabbing and ripping at the dummy, taking out every moment of rage he had felt since his brother's name had been read. When the timer signaling the end of his performance went off, he finished by stabbing the daggers into the dummy's "eyes" before standing up and gracing them with a bow.

"Ta-da," was all he said before turning around and walking out, leaving behind one dummy crushed under a pile of weights, one still swinging a few inches off the ground with a knife stick out its neck, and one with a torso completely ripped to shreds.

Writing Prompt #4
Cornucopia Bloodbath
(2 points for Tributes)

The elevators from the prep rooms rose into the arena, stylists and mentors left behind, the games beginning in only a matter of moments. An announcement from President Snow boomed in the sky. This year's Victor, who would only be crowned when he or she was the only one left standing with two or more kills under his or her belt, would be allowed to move to the Capitol, would be given freedom and luxuries that none had ever before seen. It was certainly set up to be quite a game.

Each tribute was dressed in a solid white bodysuit of a stretchy material that fit like a second skin. It had a high neck, a zipper down the front to the navel, long sleeves, and long pants that disappeared into sturdy, black, lace up boots. Over it was set a thin, white robe made of satin with a hood that tied around the waist with a black sash. On the back of each coat was the tribute's name, District, and tribute number in bold, black letters. A patch of the District's crest was stitched in over the heart.

Something was amiss with the Cornucopia, however. It was remarkably sparse, all of the gifts set very close to the shimmering gold structure itself. Around the outer edge were hard hats and lanterns. A few feet in were pickaxes and shovels. Further in was a row of white, red, green, and blue backpacks that were otherwise nondescript. Inside the Cornucopia itself sat only a single object: a black backpack.

The countdown began, numbers projected on the sky counting down from 10 to 1. A cannon shot sounded. The 85th Hunger Games, The Decimation Match, had begun.

--------------------

In order to get credit for this prompt you must reply with what your tribute does at the Cornucopia.

If your character is staying please use this post or set up your own in [info]runout to discuss with others any ensuing fights or alliances. If you need the outcomes of any fights determined please let the mod team know. You are more than welcome to carry over any fights or other events set up here into threads of your own. They need not be conducted under this prompt.

If your character is planning to grab an item or two and run or just run please indicate what items he/she is trying for and whether you'd be up for your character to be targeted for an attack by anyone else. Also, please indicate what direction your character will be running.

All posts should indicate in some fashion where you hope for your character to ideally end up should he/she survive the Cornucopia. This will help the mods plan for future events, traps, and other details!

Important Edit: Please keep in mind that the only objects at the Cornucopia are those listed in this description. Also, those Tributes who successfully grab backpacks and get away will receive a comment from the mods informing them of what is contained in the pack. Please be sure to indicate what color backpack your Tribute is going for.

Bandit couldn't honestly believe what he was hearing. A chance not only for wealth, but to save his brothers and sisters from ever being Reaped? It was just about the best reward he could've imagined (actually, better than he could've imagined, who would've thought the tight-fisted Capitol would go this route?).

Still, it was shoved to the back of his mind to make room for surveying the layout he could see - and it was puzzling. It looked almost like a town square, but not one he had ever seen before. Which, given the forced watching of Reapings in town squares all across the districts, actually meant something. In any case, the Cornucopia was surrounded by buildings, including - his heart thumped - a train station. But it looked like there were no trains on the tracks, so as much of a comfort as he would find it, the train station would probably be useless. He reluctantly pulled his eyes from it, and considered what looked a lot like the town hall back home instead. It was a fairly tall building, taller at least than the other immediate buildings, and would probably be a good place to go and scout from.

Just then, the cannon went off, and Bandit didn't take any more time to second-guess himself (although he noted the direction that the girl from his district, Nell, had ran to - she was smart, and if he needed help in the future it might be worth tracking her down). He leaped from his launching pad and began to run - not directly to the front door of the building he had selected, as he wasn't, in fact, a moron, but almost past it before ducking to the side as quickly as possible. Which was fairly quick - he had never won a race (well, okay, he had never actually competed in one, but if he had, he would've been last), but that was due to having legs half as long as everyone else's.

He paused for a moment, leaning against the back of the building, to catch his breath and see if anyone was following him. When it seemed like he was in the clear (and not likely to pass out from lack of oxygen), he turned and surveyed the probably town hall. Just as he had figured (hoped), there was a back door. It was even unlocked, which was actually more than he had hoped for.

The building was definitely a town hall. It was obvious even going off knowledge from the one tour his school had done of District Six's town hall a few years back. There wasn't anything useful laying about, not that he had expected there to be, so Bandit quickly searched for stairs. There were elevators as well, but even if the electricity was working, Bandit didn't particularly trust them.

Bandit went as high as he could before running out of stairs, and actually found himself on the roof, which was absurdly useful. He had been planning on just leaning out a window and doing the best survey he could, but the roof? Was perfect.

Of course, he didn't know if everything he could see would be within the boundaries of the game. It would be just like the Capitol to put the force fields tight around the middle and let them find out by running face-first into them, he thought with a sneer. Enough of that, time to survey.

Next to him there was the clashing and screams of the on-going bloodbath. Further out, there were... lots of buildings, most of them fairly shabby, with a small group of more impressive ones further out. Some open areas, what appeared to be a forest (look, his only experiences with forests were seeing them on TV in the Games), and a large mountain that he instinctively decided to stay away from. Random canyons and rock formations he was used to; an actual craggy mountain with forest next to it? No. No thank you. Finally, in one direction, there was a slight gleam that implied some kind of body of water. Not necessary now, but a good idea to keep track of.

He took another glance at the bloodbath before going back to the door. It was still going strong, so he'd probably be safe to get further away now, while they were distracted. Although if Bandit could rig up some explosives or at least heavy objects, the town hall roof would be a great ambush point - he pushed the idea to the back of his mind to let it grow. Right now his objectives were to get a base, maybe some supplies, and find a few likely targets.
